Flickr Pro vs Smugmug

Out of space on the free Flickr account and have been considering upgrading to the Flickr Pro membership. I also took a look at Smugmug and although I like the ability to customize your page it doesn't seem to get as much attention as Flickr does.

Thoughts?

Re: Flickr Pro vs Smugmug

I had a pro account when I was really busy and liked it but not being a user of Smugmug I cant say which is better.

What do you mean by attention, Scouts?

Re: Flickr Pro vs Smugmug

I have both, if you tell SmugMug that you are moving from Flickr you can get a discount.
SmugBlog: Don MacAskill » Blog Archive » The Dark Side of the Flickr Acquisition

There's also a tool to move all your pics over. Having said that, I like the ease of use of flickr and I've been using it a couple of years so not sure if I'll renew SmugMug. The customization features are nice though, but I'm lazy!!

Re: Flickr Pro vs Smugmug

Just signed up and Im already disappointed. This thing can take forever to customize. Now I wonder why all the blogs I read from current users say "Im too lazy to customize" Its not that their lazy... just time consuming. It needs to be more like "Website Tonight"

Yup, have to agree, takes too long. I want instant gratification or as close as possible to that. I've played with the slide shows in SmugMug etc but there's 'something' missing.

Re: Flickr Pro vs Smugmug

Most of the customizations on sumgmug are cut and paste. It only took me a few evenings of playing around to set up my site. The customization forum helps and there is a tutorial page that basically walks you through setting up banners, navbar, guestbook and gallery customization.

At first it may seem like a lot. But if you do the tutorials it is pretty easy.

Check out my smugmug site. It is not done yet, but I have implemented pretty much what the tutorials display.

Thanks

Joe

Re: Flickr Pro vs Smugmug

I have both smugmug and flickr. To me they have different uses. I like flickr for the traffic my photos receive. Smugmug for me, was more of a go to for people who's pictures I've taken, or a place to put the best of my best.

Having said that, flickr meets my needs better (a place to share and showcase) because I'm not really a money making photog (where smugmug would work better then).

Just my .02

Good luck! Going to check out Joe's site now...

Karyn

Re: Flickr Pro vs Smugmug

Fantastic site Joe! I guess I don't have the patience or brain power to figure out how to make my site cool. Will have to put that on my to do list.
