Re: zoom lens - camera body question

Buying the f/2.8 version once is probably cheaper overall than buying the f/4 IS and then having to sell it to upgrade.

The f/2.8 IS is a beast though, most people aren't going to want to walk around with that much weight/bulk, or shoot for more than a little while with it.

That was exactly my thought when deciding... I was going to pay ~$500 extra for a faster lens but I knew that this lens will be with me for a VERY long time so in the long run I would save money.

Also agree on this one but after I saw the results I got out of the AVP tournament the weight has become a non-issue... without any exaggeration after that day my shoulder was sore and I work out regularly!!! It is Heavy and the longer the shooting session the more you'll feel it but its sooo worth it.

OK I sound like a salesman!!! Good luck in your purchase and let us know what you went with.

Re: zoom lens - camera body question

I had the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 and it is a tank, but the picture quality is excellent. Here's one of my first test shots with it mounted on my XSi, taken handheld:

EDIT: Here's a link to the full-size image if you want to see all the detail: http://www.flickr.com/photos/absorpt...7616320892923/

The only reason I ended up selling it is because I didn't feel like I used it enough to justify the price.

Re: zoom lens - camera body question

Thanks guys! I recommend the lens with the caution that it is awkwardly heavy. The weight is predominantly near the front of the lens thanks to the big glass, so holding it feels a bit strange compared to other large lenses that are even heavier but where the weight is more evenly distributed, like the Canon 100-400L.

(Hopefully that makes sense! )

Completely. I have an older version of the 70-210 and the 100-400L. Your comment about the balance in the L lens and the front weight of the 70-200 is right on target.

Love them both. 70-200 for speed, 100-400 for reach.
