zoom lens - camera body question

I own a Canon XSi and looking for a zoom lens. I was reading reviews on tamron and sigma 70-200 f2.8 on dpreview and for both the reviewer says these lenses are not ideal match for the Rebel series. Is this a real problem? does anyone here own either of these lenses with a rebel?

if these are a problem, can someone recommend a fast zoom lens with good image quality?

Re: zoom lens - camera body question

It's probably an issue of size of lens vs. size/weight of the body as those lenses are quite big and have a lot of glass in them, compared to what most people are accustomed to.

Bigger lenses balance better for most people on bigger bodies, like the 40D/50D and up.

Go for it!

Re: zoom lens - camera body question

in your opinion its not an issue? i understand it is big, my concern is more towards the lens damaging the camera or lens mount due to the size/ weight. what do you think?

Depends how you hold the camera and lens combo. One hand on the lens and the other hand on the body is always the way to go.

Re: zoom lens - camera body question

Well, people mount their 1D series (which is 3.5lbs+) to the end of tripod mounted super-telephotos all the time, so there's no doubt in my mind that the EOS mount can take at least that much.

Your Rebel doesn't weigh enough to warrant concern about breaking the mount, and neither of the 70-200s will outweigh Canon's.

You're fine!

Re: zoom lens - camera body question

great. thanks fix.

now for the hard part. i know i cannot afford the canon 70-200 f2/8 L. I guess i'll go with tamron or sigma. maybe used. which one is recommended? tamron or sigma is there any other brand that is popular?

Re: zoom lens - camera body question

Unless you need the f/2.8 for DOF or low-light shooting, you could go for a used Canon f/4L version. Lot lighter, smaller, and just as sharp (if not sharper than the f/2.8 version) and same super-tough L build quality. I see them on CL for $500 or cheaper.

I don't have any experience with anything in-hand than the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS and the non-IS f/4L, so I can't be of any help picking between the other brands.

Re: zoom lens - camera body question

since this will be my first zoom lens, i think i will be happy with f4 L. Thanks for the tip fix. I will look in CL. I think i would need the IS version.

Re: zoom lens - camera body question

I have the XSi with EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM lens... I personally love the lens and its definitely one of my favorites... my only thing is that we have a crop sensor so at times I need to change cause I'm so close with 1.6x zoom!! Oh and no matter how much you say the weight is not an issue, the first time you'll use it you are going to say **** that is one heavy lens... the upside once you switch to another lens it feels like you are carrying a P&S

On the long end... this lens is wonderful specially when shooting action.

I shot this whole AVP tournament with this lens... check out the quality... hope it helps you with your decision
