When to shoot in the afternoon?

My sister wants to get her family holiday photos done this Sunday in the afternoon. Her location of choice is the Japanese Friendship Gardens in Balboa Park. When is the best time in the afternoon to take photos? Is it an hour before sunset?

I just found out that the gardens close at 4pm. Is that going to be a problem?

Re: When to shoot in the afternoon?

Maybe, maybe not. Since there is a lot of shade in that garden, you might be ok. The problem is that with a lot of sun, you might have harsh shadows or other issues with backgrounds not being what you want.

If you can get there to take a look before hand (Saturday) you might be able to scope out places to try on Sunday. And you might find that it won't work and at least have the better part of a day to find a new location.

Bring a large diffuser of some type. Sounds like you'll have people there who can help out and hold stuff for you. Calumet sells one or Backdrop Outlet with a frame and translusent panel. Check them out.

First, check to make sure they'll let you take pics there. The Japanese gardens tend to be picky about taking "serious" photo gear in there.

Oh yeah...good idea! Let me check now...

It costs $50/hr to shoot there. I think my sister is re-thinking her location...

I would be safe and go @ least 1.5 prior. The weather has been finicky and you never know when a Coastal Eddie will roll in.
