Question Kodachrome-Worthy Locales Nearby?

I've got some rolls of Kodachrome 64 waiting to be shot, and I'm trying to come up with some worthy locations nearby to shoot that would take full advantage of the film as far as being really colorful. Does anyone have any suggestions of places in the San Diego area other than the typical sunset at the beach, Old Town, or Balboa Park? Even though I've lived here for a year and a half I don't get a chance to explore much so I'm still not very familiar with anything here outside of the touristy stuff you're obligated to check out when you first get to the area.

What's wrong with Kodachrome at the beach? I think OB especially would be interesting in Kodachrome...

There is quite a bit of interesting architecture downtown, and lots of colorful people, but I can't say I'd want to burn any K64 I had down there unless you were going for the "recording" of the times.

South Park has some great old houses, old restaurants. Kensington, as well. There is always lots of color and flair in Hillcrest, and to a lesser extent, in North Park. There's a really neat tower that was just reconstructed/repainted in City Heights. It's along the south side of University Avenue, east of the 805. Very vibrant blues/yellows on that.

Torrey Pines Gliderport always has some brightly colored action going (if it's windy enough), and there are some nice homes in the La Jolla/north PB area as well, but Del Mar is probably even better for beach house and funky architecture.

El Cajon has an antique/vintage car cruise every so often, lots of bright hot rods.

Even though San Diego doesn't experience a change of season like in the Northeast, there's still lots of color in some of the trees. Right outside my office are groups of liquid amber trees (aka California maples). These are the trees with those little balls of death on them. The trees here are brilliant shades of orange and red.

In the same vein, you could head up to Julian, where color and composition can be had every time you turn around.

Thanks for those suggestions! I didn't even think of the gliderport, and it's pretty close to where I live. Now I'll have to sit down and make an itinerary. I'm trying to plan out where each roll will be shot...one or two are coming to San Francisco next month, one or two will be saved for the next time I go home to Seattle, would like to save one for Yosemite, one for the Grand Canyon...the wish list goes on and on...

  • The Hotel Del in Coronado
  • Julian
  • Point Loma Lighthouse / Cabrillo National Monument
