We got started on our trip to New Mexico but had to cut it short due to a death in the family. We got to enjoy Taos, but had to come home after that. We hope to go back to see the Santa Fe area. Lots of hikes left undone.
Anyway, we stayed at a friend's house in Holbrook Az our first night on our drive to Taos. Not much of a town, but famous for the Wigwam motel. They keep old cars parked around the place so B&W seemed appropriate for this one:
We went on a hike along the Rio Grande Gorge. The gorge wasn't formed by the river. The gorge is actually a fault line. The river just happens to run through it. Here is a pic with the bridge behind us:
On the trail there were tons of Claret cup cactus:
We also went on a river rafting trip. What a wild ride. The river is usually rated 2-3 out of 5 this time of year. It was a 4+!! What fun! We ate lunch at the Pilar Yacht Club. Hilarious place. The woman who works there was rolling her own cigs. Too funny.
We went on a tough, but rewarding 6 mile hike on Devisadero peak. There are stone chairs at the top as a reward for making the peak. Starts at 7000' elevation and tops out at 8304' elevation. Those chairs were welcomed.
We also went to Taos Pueblo. A bit of a depressing place in that the people who live and work there seem to want to live without aid of modern conveniences. Anyway, also interesting for same reasons. Here is a fave pic from there.
And last pic is of the Santuario de Chimayo. Located in Chimayo New Mexico. Chimayo grows the best New Mexico Chile peppers anywhere. Awesome stuff. The Santuario is known for its healing dirt. Very famous and revered place.
We hope to go back to New Mexico later this year and finish our trip.
