Colleen, looks like you've got the standard flash photography down quite well. Now try setting your camera to slow shutter sync, shoot in aperture priority metering for the background and set your flash to rear curtain sync. Pick an interesting background and try it! If done properly, your shutter speed should be quite slow (approaching one second) but you can still get sharp looking subjects. Nice work.

I've been practicing with the ambient light thing. I shot these in manual mode and was adjusting my shutter speed for the ambient light, but it was getting dark quick. I will try your methods, Ty. Thanks for the comments guys! Oh, and I was using my on-camera flash OFF the camera held out at arms length at about 45 degrees from my subject.

Bravo for getting that flash off the camera! If you have a diffuser, throw that on to your flash as well!
